1789
French consul visits

In 1789, the French Consul in Dublin, Charles Etienne Coquebert de Montbret, paid a visit to the Castle.

He wrote rather condescendingly of “Blarney Castle on the top of which is a large stone that visitors who climb up are made to kiss, with the promise that in so doing they will gain the privilege of telling lies for seven years.”

It does not surprise us that 1789 also saw the start of the French Revolution.
